About Matt Hunt

Matt Hunt is a journalist, documentary photographer, and storyteller connecting with people, sharing moments, and publishing stories from Southeast Asia.

Born, raised, and formally educated in the American South, I’m the byproduct of several generations of blue-collar, working-class people that merely acclimated and survived for decades. The requirement to adapt for survival—something my family had faced long before me—created a first-generation university student at the peak of the 2008 financial crisis.

I spent the formative, post-education years experimenting and growing in odd jobs that I took for basic stability, from bussing tables in restaurants with smoking sections in Florida and cleaning up National Parks, to hustling in NYC and making art in Oakland, California.

And so, so many things in between.

The experience I gained by working and seeing life through an array of American lenses instilled an understanding of the importance of diversity in my own surroundings. With perspective into what life is like for so many different types of people and by partaking in their experiences, I learned that surrounding myself with diversity allows me to constantly grow in doing the work I love.

Before pivoting from living in the US to doing business in Southeast Asia, I had a 6-year champion run at corporate-startup life in the San Francisco Bay Area. By teaching myself the technical skills to build and grow products in the digital space, I became free to go and grow freely anywhere in the world.

At the time of writing, I have lived in Bangkok, Thailand, for 6 years. I currently work as a photographer, journalist, and director of a digital services studio. My editorial work is regularly published in The Guardian, CNN, BBC, and others. See my recently published editorial work here.
