Interview: Matt Hunt
Mech Dara is a Cambodian journalist who has reported on topics including government corruption, human trafficking, and online scam operations in Southeast Asia. His work has been recognized internationally, including with an award from the U.S. Department of State. Dara has contributed to several independent news outlets, providing reporting on a range of subjects for both Cambodian and international audiences.
Dara has been persecuted for exercising freedom of speech. Mech was imprisoned for incitement, a common charge used against journalists by the Hun Sen regime, and eventually released in 2024, but remains under indefinite court supervision.
This interview with Mech Dara focuses on media involvement and the ability to report freely, particularly during the 2025 border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Amid escalating tensions and varied reports on the matter, Dara shares his perspective as best he can while adhering to the guidelines of his court supervision.
